TQ1770 : Former Albany Boathouse – now offices

by

There is a jaunty riverside style to be found in buildings in Kingston, Molesey and Hampton – and perhaps all along the Thames from (say) Putney upstream to Henley and beyond. The stampede to redevelop every possible plot that might give a view of the river has – ironically – destroyed many old buildings that gave the river its charm in the first place.

Anyway, the Albany Boathouse – dating from 1893 – has survived. Its barge-boards, pinnacles and “widow’s walks” make it a particularly jaunty example of the style I have in mind. It is included within a local conservation area, but I can’t find a Listing at the national level.

The photo – taken after office-hours in October – isn’t as well-lit as I’d have liked. When I passed by earlier a parked furniture van was obstructing the view.
