SU7880 : Hennerton Backwater, River Thames east bank opposite Shiplake: aerial 2017

by

The Backwater runs alongside the winding tree line below the (almost) square wood.

Named after Hennerton House (right of centre), Hennerton Backwater has been affectionately christened “jammy beggar land” by one happy punter.

It seems the backwater was probably formed by the River Loddon. The Thames in its meanderings then cut into the Loddon at Wargrave, and so “captured” the backwater. It would naturally have silted up and disappeared long ago were it not for the maintenance of the riverside owners who quite rightly cherish it. See http://thames.me.uk/s01040.htm
