TQ0268 : Cast-iron memorial, St Mary’s churchyard, Thorpe

by

Cast-iron ‘headstones’ aren’t particularly rare, but at Thorpe there are a good number of them, arranged along the north-east wall of the churchyard. The name on this one is George Rockall, ‘Late of HMS Trafalgar, R.N.’ – and the date, December 1896. The other cast-iron markers seemed to date from the 1890’s and early 1900’s.

I’ve never before met the surname Rockall, but you could hardly find a more nautical name.
