TQ1878 : London Museum of Water and Steam – preserved electric pump

by

This is a vertical spindle AC motor driven centrifugal pump from Hammersmith Pumping Station. It was built by W H Allen Sons & Co Ltd of Bedford c1952-4 and retired c2004. It has been re-erected in the Museum’s electric house gallery. The pump is below floor level and can be seen through a transparent panel. The design was such that the electric part and the wet part were kept separate. As most people know, water and electricity do not mix. In the right background is a steam driven dynamo set from a works in Aylesbury.
