TQ2877 : Western Pumping Station – diesel engines

A large waste water pumping station dating from 1875 and originally home to four James Watt & Co beam engines. Now (1991 anyway) has W H Allen 6 cylinder diesel engines and remains in use. The magnificent chimney ventilates the sewers.
This shows two of the W H Allen Sons & Co Ltd six cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engines driving centrifugal pumps deep in the basement. In 1991 three of the original four diesels survived. One had just been removed following its failure.
